Learn About the Tides

Tides play a major role in shelling, and understanding them can make all the difference in your beachcombing experience. The rise and fall of the ocean’s waters, caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun, determine when and where seashells are deposited along the shore. Knowing how to time your shelling trips with the tides can greatly increase your chances of finding unique and rare treasures.

Why Tides Matter for Shelling

As the tide rises and falls, it carries seashells from deeper waters and deposits them along the shoreline. Each tidal cycle plays a crucial role in uncovering fresh shells. Certain tides create ideal conditions for finding unbroken, high-quality shells, while others may make them harder to spot.

Best Tides for Shelling

  • Low Tide: This is the prime time for shelling, as more of the beach and sandbars are exposed, revealing shells that were previously underwater. During extreme low tides, especially during a full or new moon, entire stretches of seabed can be uncovered, offering exceptional shelling opportunities.
  • Falling Tide: As the tide recedes, shells that have been carried in by the waves are left behind. Walking along the waterline during a falling tide often leads to great finds.
  • After a Storm: Storms churn up the ocean floor, dislodging hidden shells and depositing them onto the beach. The days following a strong storm can be some of the best times to go shelling, as new and rare shells are often found.
  • Spring Tides vs. Neap Tides: Spring tides, which occur during full and new moons, create higher high tides and lower low tides, exposing more of the beach for shelling. Neap tides, occurring during quarter moons, have smaller tidal changes and can be less ideal for shell hunting. However, some islands can still offer great shelling even at a higher tide such as Kice Island and Shell Island. Located in the Ten Thousand Islands. Due to its geographical features, shells can get pushed up higher on the beach.

We Time Our Tours with the Tides

At Everwater Charters & Tours, we schedule our shelling excursions based on the tides to ensure our guests have the best experience possible. Our departure times are carefully planned so that you are at the island during the lowest part of the tide, giving you the best chance to find freshly uncovered shells along the exposed sandbars and tidal flats. This strategic timing increases your chances of discovering rare shells and ensures that every trip is optimized for success.
